Don't always believe what you read in gardening
books about the hardiness of plants such as Abutilon
vitifolium, Melanthus major, Carpenteria californica,
Lobelia tupa and Cytisus battandieri.
These plants are not meant to stand winters in
North Yorkshire, but they do with us! Look in
other peoples gardens near to you - you may be
amazed at which plants are thriving there.
We feel that our success is due to good drainage,
the importance of which cannot be emphasised enough.
It is crucial that plants have the correct drainage
to survive through the winter. We have no hesitation
of adding a spade full of grit to a planting hole,
or to the surrounding soil.
